生い立ち
マーク・エリオット・ザッカーバーグ（英:Mark Elliot Zuckerberg）
1984年5月14日アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州ウエストチェスター都出身。
歯科医の父と、精神科医の母の教育方針は「周囲に流されることなく自分の本当にやりたいものを全力でやらせる」というものであった。
そのため、周りが持っているという理由で欲しがったバスケットボールが買ってもらえなかったという。
幼少期から、プログラミングに関心を抱くようになり、12歳の頃に初めて両親からコンピュータを買い与えられる。
若干12歳にしてコンピュータを使いこなすまでに時間はかからなかったという。
その後2004年には世界に約24億人ものユーザーを抱えるフェイスブックを創業。
2021年現在、CEOを務める。
世界長者番付の常連であり、その保有資産は総額約623億ドルにものぼる。
スピーチの背景
今回紹介するスピーチは、2015年インドの町内会で開かれた演説の様子です。
インターネットの話題やビジネスに関することまで、様々なトピックに応えています。

Wasn’t so long ago that I was a student and sitting and in a seat in the auditorium like you guys are here today listening to.
I remember very especially this time when Bill Gates came to talk about it at Harvard.
And I’m like, “Wow, how do you do that?”
But you know, the trick is that the media likes to sensationalize this.
As if you have some Eureka moment or you are some singular person who can’t build something on your own and that’s just not how the world works.
You know, when I was in school, I built a lot of stuff that I just like building.
There was not a single moment when I had some revelation that Facebook was gonna be awesome.
That’s not maybe how the media or movies or whatever would like to portray things.
It’s not, it’s much less exciting.
But the reality is, I think most I services in the world that reach the scale that Facebook has, you start off building something that you care about.
And you know, you don’t necessarily think it’s gonna be that big, I didn’t.
You know, I built Facebook the first version of Facebook for my college community.
Because I wanted to be able to connect to the people at my school.
And I remember very clearly talking to my friends at the time and saying, it’s how cool is it that we have built this community for our school.
One day, it’s gonna be awesome when somebody else builds this for the world.
Because something like this needs to exist for the world.
But it didn’t even occur to me that my friends and I might be able to play a role in doing that.
Because we were college students, right.
I mean we didn’t have any engineers to work with or servers or resources or anything like that.
And there were these huge companies that deliver products to hundreds of millions of people right there.
I always assumed that it was gonna like Microsoft or Google or someone would build this for the world.
And what basically just happened is, that each step along the way just kind of kept doing the next thing and growing from there.
And there were teams inside there other companies that thought social media was important and we’re working on it.
But there were all these different memes and narratives in the world.
People would say, “Oh well, this is just a fad people are gonna use it but then they’re gonna stop”
So a lot of the teams who were working on didn’t take it seriously or higher-ups and companies didn’t care.
So then get resources we just kept going and going and then people would say. “Alright well, alright fine, so maybe people are using it but it’s never gonna make any money”
“Alright, social media doesn’t make any money”
Yeah, we just kind of kept going and going.
And then pretty soon we had a service that was bigger than any of these other ones.
And that kind of is how are here where we are, there’s no magic.
A lot of times I think people just get afraid because often your dream is it seems like it’s so, so far off.
But if you just kind of focus on building stuff that you think is good and…
And you kept on going at each step along the way and don’t let people deter you from that.
And you just really care about what you’re doing and kind of don’t give up but each step along the way.
Then I think that’s how you build something good.

ついこの前まで、私は学生でした。
今日皆さんが聞きに来ているような感じで、講堂の席に座っていました。
ビル・ゲイツがハーバード大学に来た時のことをとてもよく覚えています。
僕は「ワオ、彼みたいになるにはどうすればいいんだ？」
マスコミは大袈裟に取り上げるのが好きなんです。
まるでそれが何かの転機であるかのように、自分が何かを一人で作る事が出来ない人間であるかのように大袈裟ね。
しかし世界はそんな風にできていない。
学校に通っていたとき、好きなものをたくさん作りました。
フェイスブックが素晴らしくなるだろうと確信された瞬間は、一度もありませんでした。
それはたぶん、メディアや映画などが描写したいものではないのでしょう。
それほど刺激的ではなからね。
しかし現実では、フェイスブックのような規模に達する世界のサービスのほとんどは、自分の大切にしている物の構築から始まっています。
そして規模を大きくしようとする必要はありませんし、僕はそんなことを思ったことはありません。
僕は大学のコミュニティのためにフェイスブックの最初のバージョンを構築しました。
学校の人達と繋がりたいと思ったからです。
当時、友人とこんな話をしたのをはっきりと覚えています。
「学校の為に、このコミュニティを作ることがどれほどイケているか、いつか誰かが世界規模でこれを作ったらすごいことになりそうだ」ってね。
これは世界に必要ですが、僕も友人もその役割を自分たちが果たせるとは思っていませんでした。
それに僕たちは大学生でしたから、僕らには一緒に仕事をするエンジニアやサーバー、リソースなどは何もありあませんでした。
それに数億人の人々の為に製品を提供している巨大企業がありました。
なのでマイクロソフトであったり、グーグルの誰かが世界の為にそれを創ってくれるだろうと思っていました。
一歩一歩前に進み続けることで成長してきたのです。
そして大企業の中にもSNSが重要だと考えてるチームがいて、ともに取り組んでいます。
しかし世界にはいろいろな模倣された情報や物語があって、人々は「これはただの流行りでみんな使っているが、もう辞めるんじゃないかな」と考えます。
でやすから、多くのSNS事業チームはそこまで真剣に取り組んでいませんでしたし、上層部や企業は気にしていませんでした。
資源を手に入れて進み続けても、「大丈夫、大丈夫、みんな使ってくれるよ。でも、SNSはお金にならない」と周りの人に言われ続けてました。
それでも、我々は進み続けました。
そしてすぐに他のサービスよりも大きなサービスを提供することが出来たのです。
魔法ではなく、そうやって僕らはここまでたどり着いたんだ。
多くの場合、人々はただ怖がるだけだと思います。
それは夢がとても多くにあるように思えるからです。
でも自分が良いと思うものを創ることに集中し、一歩一歩進み続け、人の目なんか気にしない。
自分のしていることに本当に意識を持っていき、諦めちゃだめ。
一歩一歩積み重ねていくことです。
そうやって良い物を創っていくんだと思います。

誰かに評価されなくても、地道に一歩一歩進むのみ。
