TISCH graduates, you made it.
And you’re F**ked.
Think about that.
The graduates from the college of nursing, they all have jobs.
The graduates from the college of dentistry, fully employed.
The proud graduates of the NY school of Law, they’re covered.
And if they’re not, who cares? They’re lawers.
The graduates in accounting, they all have jobs.
Where does that leave you?
Envious of those accountants?
I doubt it.
They had a choice.
Maybe they were passionate about accounting but I think it’s more likely that they used reason and logic and common sense to reach for a career that could give them the expectation of success and stability.
Reason, logic, common sense at the TISCH School of Arts?
Are you kidding me?
But you didn’t have that choice, did you?
You discovered a talent, developed an ambition, and recognized your passion.
When you feel that you can’t fight it, you just go with it.
When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense.
You aren’t just following dreams, you’re reaching for your destiny.
You’re a dancer, singer, a choreographer, a musician, a filmmaker, a writer, a photographer, a director, a producer, an actor, an artist.
Yeah, you’re F**ked.
Well. it’s a start.
On this day of triumphantly graduating, a new door is opening for you.
A door to a lifetime of rejection.
It’s inevitable, it’s what graduates call, “The real world”.
You’re experiencing it auditioning for a part of a place in a company.
It’ll happen to you when you’re looking for backers for a project.
You’ll feel it when doors close on you while you’re trying to get attention for something you have written and you’re looking for a directing or a choreography job.
Rejection might sting but my feeling is that often it has very little to do with you.
When you’re auditioning or pitching, the director or producer, or investor might just have something or someone different in mind.
That’s just how it is.
You’ll get a lot of direction in your career.
Some of it from directors, some from studio heads, some from money people, some from writers.
Listen to all of it, and listen to yourself.
I’m mostly going to talk about these ideas in movie actor terms, but I think this applies to all of you.
You’ll find comparable situations in all the disciplines.
And the director, producer, choreographer, or company artistic director.
These are powerful positions.
But the powers don’t come from the title.
The power comes from trust, person, respect, vision, work, and again collaboration.
You’re probably harder on yourself than any director.
I’m not going to tell you to go easy on yourselves.
I assume you didn’t pick this life because you thought it would be easy.
You may have to answer to a director for a job, but you also have to answer to yourself.
This could create conflicts for you.
There will be times when your best isn’t good enough.
There can be many reasons for this, but as long as you give your best, you’ll be okay.
Did you get straight “A”s at school?
If so, good for you, congratulations.
But in the real world, you’ll never get straight “A”s again.
There are ups and there are downs.
And what I want to say to you today is that it’s okay.
Instead of rocking caps and gowns today, I can see all of you graduating today in custom TSOA T-shirts.
On the back is printed, “Rejection-it isn’t personal”
And on the front: your motto, your mantra, your battle cry, “Next”
You didn’t get that part, that’s my point, “Next”
You’ll get the next one, or get the next one after that.
You’ll be here to pause and celebrate your accomplishments so far, as you move on to a rich and challenging future.
And me, I’m here to hand out my picture and resumes to the directing and producing graduates.
I’m excited and honored to be in a room full of young creators who make me hopeful about the future of the performing and media arts.

皆さんが作家として関心を受けようと努力するときや、演出や振り付けの仕事をしようとした時もです。
拒絶される事は辛いでしょうが、すべてがあなた自身の問題なのではないのです。
オーディションを受ける時、監督やプロデューサー、投資家がすでに他の人を念頭に置いている場合があります。
そういうものなんです。
仕事をしているうちに、多くの指示を受けることになるでしょう。
監督であったり、スタジオ責任者、支援者、作家などからです。
その全てを聞いて、自分自身の声にも耳を傾けてください。
私の話のほとんどが映画俳優の観点からですが、あなた方全員に当てはまると思います。
そしてあらゆる分野で同様の状況に直面するでしょう。
ディレクター、プロデューサー、振付師、芸術監督。
これらは力をもつ立場です。
けれど、力とは肩書でなありません。
力とは信頼、尊敬、ビジョン、努力、そして協力から生まれるものです。
皆さんはおそらく、どの監督よりも自分に厳しくあると思います。
自分に神田院いなれとは言いません。
なぜなら、皆さんは選んだ道が簡単ではないことを知っているからです。
仕事の為、監督に応えなければならないこともあるかもしれませんが、自分自身にもそうです。
こんな状況はあなたの中で葛藤となるでしょう。
時には、最善を尽くしても十分ではない時があります。
これにはたくさんの理由がありますが、最善を尽くしたのなら大丈夫です。
学校の成績は全てAの評価でしたか？
もしそうなら、おめでとう。
しかし社会に出たら、全てAというのは絶対にとれないでしょう。
人生山あり谷ありです。
私が言いたいのは、「それでも大丈夫」ということです。
今日、学士帽とガウンの代わりにTSOAのオリジナルTシャツを着た皆さんが見えます。
Tシャツの裏には「拒絶 個人の問題ではない」と書かれています。
そして皆さんのモットーであり、スローガンである「次へ」が表に書かれています。
役をもらえなかったなら「次へ」
次掴み取ればいいし、そのまた次でもいい。
皆さんは一度立ち止まり、今までの成果を祝うためにここいます。
豊かで挑戦に満ちた未来に進むために。そして私は、写真と履歴書を奪る為にここにいます。
若いクリエイターたちと同じ空間に居られることを嬉しく、そして光栄に思います。
皆さんなら成功できると確信しています。
幸運を祈ります。
