Old man:
Okay, may I ask you a question, the first one?
Right, what is the worst thing about being young?
Young boy:
Well, you get lots of homework.
It’s also pretty, it’s like in the middle.
Like it’s all like in the middle of bad and good.
What is the worst thing about being old?
Man:
Not being able to do things, that you could do when you were young.
Boy;
Like you can’t bend down and get stuff on the floor.
Man:
Well. I can still do that.
But the problem is, your body gets a bit stiff.
Boy:
Oh, I know it hurts a lot when you try to bend down.
Man:
Yeah, that’s right.
You might get sick, more often, hopefully, I don’t.
Boy:
Yeah, that’s pretty bad.
Man:
It is pretty bad.
Boy:
The only time I went to the hospital was my mom didn’t like getting me born.
Man:
Ah, yeah, do you wish you were older?
Boy:
Maybe…so if I were old, I could buy stuff for my own, and be married, but… that would be ew…
Do you wish you were young? Why?
Man:
Well, uh, the problem about, the great thing about being young is, you have more time.
You have more time to do things.
I could play games which I did, I used to play Cowboy and Indians.
Boy:
Yeah, that’s what I play.
Man:
Do you?
That’s what I like about being young.
I could use my imagination more.
Boy:
That’s sad story, you can’tdo that anymore
Man:
Well, I could be an older cowboy.
I might do it, yes.
Will you fall in love? And what would it be like?
Boy:
I don’t know.
Like, we’ll have babies and it would be as fun.
Even though I’ll have to change his diaper, it’ll be fun.
But what about if he cries?
I’ll just sing like Ed Sheeran to him.
Man:
And, who do you love now?
Boy:
Um… my mom.
Man:
Your mom? Your dad?
Boy:
Yeah, I like my dad, I like my family.
Did you fall in love? And what was it like?
Man:
Yes, uh… It was different for me.
I fell in love late.
Boy:
And did you get married?
Man:
No, unfortunately, my partner, passed away, she died.
That’s was a sad thing, yeah, she got sick.
Boy:
I’m gonna cry.
Man:
No, no don’t, no-no-no.
You see, these things happen, Shawn, that’s life.
But we have, I have every good memory, very good memories.
And you live, a lot of the time you live in your head with those memories.
You can remember all the good things, and that’s the important thing.

Man:
Well, the advice I would give to you Shawn is, you don’t have to be rich, to be happy.
Do the things you like to, and that makes you feel good.
Because when you’re happy yourself, everybody else is happy.
"Shawn, do you have any advice for Gordez?"
Boy:
To like, act normal.
Don’t be silly, don’t bully lots of people.
The people I know in school like my friend Alex in school.
Whenever her gets hurt, I hug him.
It might not be able to work but.
Man:
No, that’s good advice.
And, be yourself.
Don’t let other people tell you what you should be.
Just be as you are, isn’t that true?
And I’m sure your life is going to be very successful.
You have all the right things. You have all the right things to do.
All your good friends and keep those friends going.
And keep life going, there you go

男性：
じゃあ、最初の質問をしていいかな？
若くて一番嫌なことはなんですか？
子供：
うーんっと、たくさんの宿題があること。

身体を曲げるとすごく痛いんでしょ。
男性：
まさにそうなんだよ。
意図に反して病気にもかかりやすくなるしね。
子供：
それはとても嫌だね。
男性：
本当にそうだよ。
子供：
病院に行ったのは一度、僕が生まれた時だけだよ。
男性：
そうなんだね。
君は歳をとりたいと思いますか？
子供：
多分…大人になったら好きな物を自分で買えるし、結婚もできるけど、どうかな。
若返りたいと思いますか？ それはなんで？
男性：
そうだね、若くていいことは時間がたくさんあるということですね。
いろんなことをする時間があるよね。
昔よくやったカウボーイインディアンごっこだって出来るね。
子供：
僕もするよ。
男性：
するの？
それが若くていいとこさ。
もっと想像力があった。
子供：
もうできないなんて悲しいね。
男性：
でもまだ年寄りのカウボーイにはなれるよ。
それがいい、そうしよう。
誰かと恋に落ちるかな？
そしてそれはどんな感じかな？
子供：
分からないよ。
子供が出来たら楽しいし、おしめを変えるのだってきっと楽しいよ。
でも泣いちゃったらどうしよう。
エドシーランみたいに歌を歌ってあげようかな。
男性：
今好きな子はいるの？
子供：
ママ
男性：
お母さん？お父さんは？
子供：
お父さんも好き。
家族皆好きだよ。
誰かと恋に落ちたことはありますか？
それはどんな感じでしたか？
男性：
うん、そうだな。ほかの人とは違って、遅くに恋に落ちたんです。
子供：
それで結婚したの？
男性：
いや、残念ながら彼女は亡くなってしまったんだ。
悲しかったよ。
病気だったんだ。
子供：
泣いちゃいそう。
男性：
いや、泣くとないさ。
それが人生というもので、いつか起きてしまうことなんだよ。ショーン。
でも私たちには良い思い出があって、そのたくさんの思い出と暮らしていける。
いい事を全て覚えておく、それこそが大事なことなんだよ。
「その後、彼らにアドバイスをしあってもらいました」
男性：
私から君へのアドバイスは幸せになるためにお金持ちになる必要はない。
君が好きなこと。楽しいと思える事をしなさい。
君自身が幸せだと、ほかの皆も幸せになるんだ。
「ショーン、ゴルデスさんに何かアドバイスある？」
子供
自然でいること。
くだらない事や皆に意地悪しないこと。
学校の友だちのアレックスが傷ついたら、僕はいつもハグしてあげるんだ。
効果があるかは分からないけどね。
男性：
いや、素晴らしいアドバイスだよ。
他人に何と言われようと、自分らしく。
ただ自分らしくいなさい、そういうことでしょう？
君の人生はきっと上手く行くよ。
君は正しい事、何をすべきか分かっている。
素晴らしい友だちもいる。その子たちと仲良くね。
そのままでいいんだよ。おいで。
まとめ
子供の素直さとお爺さんの落ち着きがとても心地よい対談でした。
孫も子供もいないであろうお爺さんが子供の目線になって話をしいる姿に優しさが滲み出ていました。
子供は、お爺さんの目を見て話したり、共感力の高さが伺えました。
